SOCIAL MEDIA SITES are online meeting places which enable communities and communication. Some like FACEBOOK are inclined towards social use especially by the younger generations whereas others like LINKEDIN are aimed more at business users and building professional networks.
One of the fastest growing examples is TWITTER which is often accessed on mobile phones to bring news and information on people you are interested in or just generally. It is described as a MICRO BLOGGING SERVICE. Breaking news now often appears first as a TWEET, really a message sent on TWITTER, and the service is being increasingly used by businesses
Whilst some social media sites have been criticised for privacy reasons the concept is being taken onboard by large organisations such as Dell and IBM as a better means of communicating with customers and internally.
Care does need to be taken in using these sites, but they can represent a very enriching experience. If you are concerned about protecting your identity you can a pseudonym when you join a new social media site. However this may not allow you to get the most out of the site.
In effect communication becomes interactive and social media sites allow allow the creation and exchange of USER GENERATED CONTENT.
